Default Body contact

I've never raced, but thanks to a recently acquired Tivo, I've been watching lots of racing and have been suprised by two things: the amount of contact in some series and the variation between series or classes.

How come something like BTCC and SCCA T2 seem so much rougher than some other classes?
Are they pandering to the crowd's love of crashes and spins?
Is it just that touring cars are more robust?
Are there any rules in BTCC?

As a racer, is it more fun to be in a high speed brawl or a series where they avoid contact?

IMO i like to see races with close calls rather than crashes. it sucks to have to practice to get your car tuned right, then have some idiot smash into you and retire you and other people out of the race. but i guess when you're pushing that hard its bound to happen, it happens in every motorsport. but as far as the race being exciting... it all depends on how bad each driver wants it and whos pushing the hardest.

For T2, it's mostly a function of the size of the field. At the SCCA Runoffs, T2, EP, FP, A Sedan, and Formula Vee were all messes, and were all among the largest classes at the Runoffs. You put 40+ cars on a 2.2 mile track for a National Championship, and there's bound to be some contact. For the standard SCCA National races, there's usually not as much contact.

For a pro series, the drivers are paid to win, and pass the guy in front of them, and don't have to rebuild the car if there is some body damage. It's a much different mentality.
