Default Car Won't Start / Neutral Safety Switch

My car wouldn't start the other day, but I have a fairly new battery and it wouldn't even attempt to turn over or *click* when I turned the key. I kept pumping the clutch and eventually it started right up. I tried again and it took awhile before it worked again. If I put the car in neutral and reach up under the dashboard to manually hold down the neutral safety switch it works just about 100% of the time.

My question is, is there any way just to disable this stupid switch? It looks like a pain in the butt to install a new one just because of where its located. I got a quote of $130 to replace it from the dealership - but that seems outrageous considering the part is $25. I'm no mechanic, but I like to try to fix things myself when possible. Anyone have any advice?

Also, whatever happened to genuinesubaruparts.com ? Or do I have the name wrong?

The switch is a safety device. Without it someone could start the car with the clutch out and in gear. I am old school, the cars I grew up with had no such device on the clutch. Of course a carburetor car would never start with just a hit of the key like modern cars. In any case if you insist, insert a jumper (a short wire) across the two sides of the switch and it will be disable the safety device. Do this at your own risk. Iíve had mine like that for 60K.

Maybe the switch isn't adjusted right? Does pressing the clutch in all the way trigger the switch? Use a continuity meter to find out. New floor mats preventing the clutch from getting all the way to the floor?
