Default Why is this??

I was looking at tire sizes that I can fit on a 7.5" wide wheel.

It said you can put a 245/45 on a 7.5" to 9" wide wheel but for a 245/40 they say a 8.0" to 9.5" wide wheel??? How does the profile of the tire affect the width of the rim you can put it on????

It's pretty simple. The taller the sidewall, the more it will "squish" or "stretch" to fit the rim.

245 has a cross section of ~9"

The 40 series has 3.9" to get it squished down to the rim width, while the 45 has 4.3" to get to the rim.

That extra 0.4" of height gives you wider latitude in choosing a rim width.

Another factor is that shorter sidewalls have to be stiffer to provide the same support, so they don't flex as easily.

Finally, even though both tires are rated at 245 width, the 40 series may be wider due to differences in construction.
