Default Should I stay or should I go?: 16 vs 17 wheels

Hello all. I've been a long time lurker and sometime poster on this group, but I've lurked so long I've forgotten my login and password, so please forgive my "first post" status.

The time has come on my 2002 WRX wagon where I need new tires (40,000 miles) as the horrid RE92s have finally worn out. I currently have my set of winters on the stock 16" rims, but am torn greatly between just buying a good set of tires to put on the stock rims, or to spring for prodrive P1 17" rims.

I need you opinions. I'm not a tuner, the car is dead stock, but I do like the machine to handle well. I know merely staring at those pretty P1 rims isn't worth $1000 to me, so my question is will I see a signifigant handling benefit from the 17" rims with good tires, or should I just get really good tires to put on my 16" rims? I have no intention of modifying the braking system so clearance isn't an issue, but I do have a deep seated fear that even the Prodrive p1s with almost perfect offset would somehow foul up my all-too-expensive extended warranty.

Opinions please?

Thanks all!

If you want fairly inexpensive 17 inch wheels look at Rotas. I am running 16x7 inch wheels because I didn't want to up to 17 inch wheels for whatever reason when I got the wheels. It is purely each person's opinion. You can gain a similar handling advantage with a good set of 16 inch tires. The diameter of the wheel has little to do with the amount of performance you can get. It has to do with the width and what tire you put on that wheel. If you are only driving on the street which is what it sounds like and you don't want to spend a lot of money get a good set of 16 inch tires for the stock wheels they will work fine for you.

Wider wheels allow you to fit wider tires allowing for more traction. I ended up getting 17" rotas (17 x 7.5) and they made a huge difference over stock 16"ers. The handling is like a day and night difference. The cool part is i also bought some sumitomo htr high-performance-all-season tires and they work pretty well on the street and in the snow. For the money these tires were super cheap and a lot better than the stock re92s.

Get 17s
