Default What could cause a check engine light?

I drive a 99 Impreza 2.5 RS

I know that there are many things that could set off the light, but mine lit up tonight. I don't know what it could be, my car is driving the same as it did before the light, and fluids are all normal. The thing is, I have an exhaust leak, I can't see the leak itsself, but its clear exhaust is escaping from around the flange of the headers joining to the intermediate pipe. (I see it on cold days) I was curious could this cause the problem? or what else is common to set it off on my impreza at around 122,000 KM ?

Cat innefficiency or soemthing of the like would be my guess. Leaky exhaust can definitely give you a CEL providing the leak is pre-O2 sensor.

**** its already dark its killing me to see where the O2 sensor is. The leak is around the flange that joins the intermediate pipe, to the back of the second cat...

Any other opinions? is it safe to drive the car? will I screw things up worse?

is teh CEL blinking? if its blinking dont drive, if its constant you should be ok to drive it. most likely bad o2 sensor or cat inefficiency. there are 2 o2 sensors in the exhaust, 1 before and 1 after the cat. take off the heat shields (assuming theyre still there) and you should see them fairly easily

Hit up autozone or someother place that will pull the code for free and post that code P-xxxx. Chances are its nothing major, but I wouldnt go along time without knowing what it is. The O2 sensor sits on top of the cat on the drivers side.

Its not blinking. I will go to a place and get the code ASAP, but will I be okay to make a few miles on the car? (50 tops) ?

oh and if its a "cat inefficiency" code, does that mean new cats? or is that fixed by replacing o2 sensors?

i drove on mine when my rear o2 went out for a full tank of gas. youre fine dude, only setback will be some extra fuel wasted (and blown into the cat )

I dont care about the cats because Im getting some cobbs soon enough, I just want to be sure it is that o2 sensor and not something worse.
