Default Installing '04 USDM STI Steering Rack in non-'04 STI

Hello gents!

I'm working on installing a 15:1 ratio USDM STI rack in my 98 Legacy. I can see that the splines on the rack are different than my 98 GT. Anyone worked around this?

Here is a thread about it STEERING RACK THREAD , but I know you guys are probably the ones to have messed with this the most.

Thanks,

Matt

I installed the 04 STi steering rack in my 1993 impreza. I had a welder cut the two different universal joints apart and make one with the STi splines on the lower portion and the impreza splines on the upper portion. Worked out very well. Although the FWD rack I had in the car prior allowed for more steering angle (tighter turns).

Thanks for the reply!

Although I was hoping to not have to fabricate just, disassemble/reassemble. Well, I may try it but it may go in after the swap then. I don't want to risk stock peices and a system that I know works to either cut and weld myself, or have someone else do it. Budgets suck, though if I just sell off the STI rack, I may be able to get something else thats cool! But having to weld up an exhaust and now a steering U-joint I may just do it.

Oh, did you have to cut and weld? not able to press or pull the U-joints apart? I'll have to yank mine off the Legacy and get a good handle on how it's made.

I thought about trying to press the pins out but a friend is a very good welder so that was the easier (free) option

Don't know if you will be able to mix and match the two model u-joints either. I vaguely remember looking at the two u-joints I had and thinking the dimensions of the two were different. But I'm working with a '93 impreza and your Legacys u-joint may be of the same style/design and you might be able to mix and match.

I also am not that familiar with manufacturing processes. So I don't know if a local machine shop could put them back together properly?

Well, now I have it laying on the fender, it looks like the easiest way to get the rack to work is welding (no press points look good, a seam is shown, but not pressable without a bit of fab just to get it back in), so I think either I sell the STi rack or weld like you did. Ahhh decisions, decisions,. . .
