Default Consumer reports: child seats in Tribeca

Hi all,
My wife and I were reading the Nov 2005 Consumer Reports issue where several mid-SUV's were tested, one of which was the Tribeca (it received a rating of "Recommended", BTW!). On page 65 (the Tribeca review) under "Safety Notes" the magazine states that "...Surprisingly, Subaru recommends that child seats not be installed in the second-row center seat -- normally the safest position -- or in the third row, but includes tether straps for all rows."

Could anyone out there with a Tribeca provide some information on why Subaru doesn't recommend child seat installation in the second-row center seat (is there some info in the Owners Manual, perhaps?) ? My wife and I test drove the Tribeca, and also checked out a couple of other similar seven-seat SUVs (with split 2nd row seats and all), and couldn't find any significant differences in comparison to make that "recommendation" obvious.
We are so used to putting our daughter's child seat in the middle, that this recommendation by Subaru could be a deal-breaker. But we are so in love with this car!!! Help!!!! Please!

Because if you install child seat in center seat, you will not be able to get into 3rd row anymore. Center seat on Tribeca is really only half the size of side seats. That's about all I can think of.

My Impreza is the same way, although I have put the seat in the middle anyway. I think the reason is that the LATCH anchors are only the correct distance apart in the outboard positions. You could just use the center seatbelt, which is stronger than the LATCH system anyway.

Subaru says that because of the shape of the seat, which may not work to well with some seats. Since they can't guarantee a fit, they simply cover the bases and don't suggest it for any. Our seat fits perfectly in the center position and we use the belt, which is in fact stronger than the latch system. That said we alternate a lot in seating position bases on who else is in the car.
The B9 is a 5 star rated SUV and I've been told by dealers here in NY and in PA that it's side impact strength is far better than other makes.
My tip? Stay out of accidents.

B9 Limited
