Car overheating after recent head gasket replacement: HELP!
So I just left my house and was driving down the street and noticed my engine temp guage was above the halfway mark, which it never is. I drove a little further keeping an eye on it and it started to get higher. I pulled into a gas station and added some coolant.
I started driving again and the temp started to rise again. I pulled over and turned off the engine and waited with the heat on full blast (which by the way was only pushing out cold air the entire time). After the temp gauge dropped again I started driving back home. When it got high I would shut it off again, but I was close to home so it only happened a couple times. Right before my house the heat actually started working and it looked like the temp gauge started to drop to almost in the middle. Anyway I parked and turned it off. Background info: 2000 2.5 RS 107k Just had the head gaskets replaced at about 105k a month ago. What is going on???

If you didnt get a new water pump put on when the gaskets were done then i would check there first.

It could be a number of things. The thermostat could have been sticking closed, that would be the cheapest and easiest thing to try first.
Unfortunatly your symptoms sound excactly like head gaskets. You might want to take it back to whoever installed them and have them check it out. |

Horrorbiz: It sounds like you have a slow leak in your coolant system. If you could get coolant into the radiator then that means that it was low.
Thecodeman: Yes, classic bad t-stat symptoms. |

It sounds like you have a blown head gasket but it could also be something as simple as air trapped in the system or a faulty t-stat. If you had the head gasket done by someone who doesn't understand the importance of sequence torquing the head bolts during reassembly, then you have a problem. I would take the car back to your tech a.s.a.p. and have them take care of it.

try checking your upper and lower radiator hoses when car is warmed up, that will let you know if it's a stuck thermostat. start w/the easy items first.
I had something like that a month or 2 ago, and it turned out that quite a bit of water had evaporated from overflow tank. I filled it up and the temps stayed normal. Did your cooling system suck the overflow water back right away? |

Well I am new and i hate to necropost, but I also have been having overheating problems
Background: 99 legacy outback new water pump and thermostat When the temp gauge starts to crawl up the heater blows cold air. This is something that I don't get. |

Did the overheating occur right after replacing the water pump and thermostat?
Something I did (stupid me) after replacing timing belt, I forgot to plug in my fans. Make sure they are plugged in and working. Could be a thermostat (unless you changed that at the time of the water pump). Could also be an air bubble. I forget the procedure to burp the system of air. |

Well After a small road trip yesterday, ie to the parts store, it started running hot. I limped the ole girl home and found I was down 3l of coolant.
There are none of the classic signs of a blown headgasket, but I am dreading that, indeed my headgasket is toast. I am going to get it into the mechanic tommorow AM and get his eyes on it. |

Only time I had a headgasket issue, my car would overheat just about instantly. We replaced the T-stat and it still shot up to red after only driving it a minute (after warmed up). Replaced the one bad headgasket, and she worked fine.
2 weeks later the clutch pack on the tranny went. |
