Default Is $500 for a 2.5L shortblock a good deal?

At some point in the near future I will be rebuilding my engine or building a new one to swap in. F&S Auto Parts www.fsautoparts.com has used 2.5L shortblocks for $500, so I could pick up one of those and build it in my living room. They didn't specify Phase I vs. Phase II, so I'm assuming I could ask for whichever I want.

Is that a good deal, or are there shortblocks out there for less coin? The only stuff I see on Ebay is complete engines, and I honestly haven't looked in the classifieds here.

Thanks,
Pat Olsen

You should start searching the classifieds here - I just picked up an '02 EJ25 shortblock for $350 with 28K on it.

Rogue and Mechman900 have some uncanny ability to find engines on the cheap in the Mid-A area. Rogue just picked up a DOHC 2.5L for $100. I'm looking to do the same thing, or at least, get the parts I want to replace (heads and cams at the least). And honestly, who cares what the condition is as long as the cylinder walls are intact. Everything else can be easily replaced or modified to work.

There are some yards down here. Octagon Spares in PA (2 hours North of DC) that specializes in subarus. I haven't shopped there for a complete engine, but it might work. I'll see what Rogue has to say tomorrow night at BSG night and post up.

And check rs25.com as well. There are plenty of swappers selling their engines. Infact, I think a DOHC engine in southern NJ. I'm not sure if he's sold it or not, but it might be a possibility.

You might want to make sure you know which block it is. 2.5 STi block is a lot different than the 2.5 RS Block.....maybe the $500 one is a STi block.....which would be nice to have..

Also, so shorts come with the crank, rods, pistons...and some are bare.

I'd be extremely surprised if they were selling a STi shortblock for only $500. F&S has dozens and dozens of salvaged Outbacks, so I'm pretty sure they'd be selling plain ol' N/A 2.5L motors. I'd definitely make sure I knew what I was getting, though.

If it's bare, then it's by definition not a shortblock. A shortblock includes the internals.

AJ - Thanks for the info. I haven't decided what my plans are, but I think I would be inclined to go with a Phase II shortblock to get the better CR when used with my already-Cobb'd DOHC heads. Hell, I might end up needing 2 engines - a SOHC shortblock to put my heads on, and a complete DOHC engine to put in the car while the current engine is out and being combined with the Phase II shortblock. We'll see...

Anyway, I guess the answer to my question is: "There are better deals out there." Time to start shopping!

Well the ebay market is sorta mine at the moment... So I put it up there for what I want to get, not what the "market" says.

Patrick,
Shoot me a PM. I'll take care of you if you want a builder shortblock. I've got a spare phase II that spun a couple of rod bearings that would make a good builder.

If it's a used shortblock that you would just drop in the car, $500 is a pretty average price from an importer. If you want to deal with the private FS's you can get them cheaper, but sometimes efficiency and a company to back up the deal is worth an extra $100 or so. I know of a couple of "good used" Ej25's that have gone through the FS section only to have a blown head gasket or spun bearing as soon as they were installed...

I have a friend in the market for a EJ25 block for a frankenmotor build. What is the best choice if using '94 dual port heads with 145k on them?

$500 for a shorblock sounds high to me, but is right on par as far as price goes if you were to buy it from a salvage/junk yard. i personally bought mine for $200 from a guy on legacycentral. 150k on the odo, but i think it will be okay. of course if this yard offers any kind of warranty or guarantee, take it.

Of course you are going to pay that kind of price with that kind of mileage. Your block needs a full rebuild. I paid $500 for my MY00 block with 40k mi on the clock and was happy to do so. Mileage and condition have a HUGE influence on the value of a block...

Someone's being a big meanie tonight, eh, Matt?

Yes, if it's just a shortblock, $900 is way too high. A complete, healthy engine should run you about that much.

Just being silly. I considered that question in the realm of "Does this dress make me look fat?"

I have found complete engines with 3x the miles for that price, but all complete engines I have found with similar mileage have been 50%+ more expensive.

I'm betting it wasn't $900 for a short block, maybe longblock or complete. I'll have one for sale in the near future I hope. 04 2.5 with 60,000 miles, delta cams, in great shape and i was planning on sell it for around $900. I'm working on my 6-speed and full drivetrain swap now and then h6 swap. But I can't decide what flavor to go with yet. eg33, ez30d or ez30r?

Will this engine fit in a 2000 Outback Legacy? My friend just blew his engine due to timing belt failure.
Thanks.
