Default 2016 Wrx Sti Starlink Unit into 2015 wrx with nav (harman kardon)

My 2015 subaru wrx HARMAN KARDON NAV had a nasty scratch on the headunit. So i was looking to either replace it or maybe upgrade to the newer looking 2016+ ones. They look a lot better. I'm not a fan of the aftermarket looking headunits.

I was well aware that it no one has ever done it, so it might not work. However most of the main plugs seem to plug right in. So i just gave it a shot. For science!

The Starlink unit (note some of the antennas do not fit and usb. 5 pin backup camera not used)

Fit's fine (i didn't push it in all the way)

I figure as much. You can't used your original center vents. They just don't line up at all.

It fires right up, sweet! The bluetooth works. My buddy texted my while i was messing with it and it pop up on the screen.

i noticed that it didn't make any beeps when i was going through the menus. I fired up a song through bluetooth and nothing. DARN. I Have the harman kardon package so the amp not firing up or something? I'm pretty sure this sti headunit is the harmon kardon headunit too; so i would figure it would work.

I went to the sound setting and it was pretty much grayed out.

So yeah. This attempt was a fail, i was hopeful that it would work but knew it wasn't 100 percent. It's almost there. Just needs sound. If anyone knows anything that might solve the issue please chime in. Hope this post shed some light on the people who were curious.

UPDATE, i got the sound coming in by powering up the 9 pin of the 10 pin connector. I just splice the wire to a 12 volt source.

no volume control or adjusting eq.

Subaru radically changed the h/k system in the newest models (2016-2017 WRX, STi, & Forester, and 2015-2017 Legacy & Outback).

The old h/k HUs still had 4 powered (amplified) speaker outputs. The HU still performed all of the balance/fade and EQ adjustments on those 4 outputs. Those 4 outputs were fed into the h/k amp, and the amp generated 8 outputs (4 doors, 2 tweeters, and a dual-voicecoil sub). There was no other communication between the HU and amp.

On the new h/k system, the HU only provides 2 audio outputs (presumably not amplified), at a fixed volume! The HU has several separate control lines that talk to the new style h/k amp. The amp handles all of the balance/fade and EQ functions.

Bottom line: The new-style HU is completely incompatible with your old-style h/k amp.

Swapping in a newer h/k amp is theoretically possible, but IMHO not worth the effort (due to all of the wiring changes you would have to make between HU and amp).

BTW, your pictures aren't visible. Please upload them to an image hosting site like photobucket, imgur, or similar and update your links.

Thanks for the heads up.

That would explain why i can't control the volume at all. It sounds better than base model wrx still though even though it's Frankenstein.

aww man, really wanted this setup too.

Also, your 2015's steering wheel controls are incompatible. The wires still go to the same pins on the 28-pin harness and socket, but Subaru switched to a new button pod with 11 functions (where your 2015 has 8). More importantly, all of the resistor values are completely different.

You might find that a few of your 2015 buttons happen to do something on the 2016 HU, but they won't be the desired function. For example:
  • 'tune/seek up' button will do 'volume up' [if you had the new h/k amp, of course]
  • 'volume up' button will do 'Return'
  • 'Mode' button will do 'Mute/Enter'

All of these changed to different physical connectors from your 2015 to the 2016:
  • USB
  • XM sat radio antenna
  • GPS antenna
  • Rear camera (old = 16-pin plug, new = 5-pin plug)

And as you found, there are a couple of minor changes to the signals on the harnesses (e.g., the new HU's 10-pin socket no longer has the +12V amp trigger signal).

But kudos for trying and posting your pics and videos.

You certainly know your stuff! I couldn't find any of this stuff online and bam, you know all of it. Down to the pin layouts and what they do.

thanks for the clarification, and saving me a lot of time. Time to find a nice aftermarket headunit with android auto and apple carplay that can use this amp i suppose!

Hello there! Has anyone confirmed that the H/K head unit does provide line level outputs? I'm serisouly considering the purchase of a 2017 WRX with the H/K system. Curious as to what upgrades might be possible down the line with this system.

Thanks!

Not confirmed. Just very likely, since the HU is so highly integrated with the new h/k amp (so you'll never see this same HU model in a different trim level without the amp).

Your upgrade options are to either tap into the h/k amp's speaker-level outputs, or ditch both the HU and amp and replace with aftermarket units.

Just to be clear: The communication between the OEM HU and new h/k amp is via proprietary signals. It's extremely unlikely anyone will develop a box that would decode the OEM HU's control signals to allow you to swap in an aftermarket amp.

That's the answer I needed (not necessarily wanted). Thanks! I'm thinking that the h/k system will satisfy my needs. I was hoping it was a straight line-level out but if not c'est la vie! I really enjoy a clean OEM look and would really be hesitant to swap it out.

Anyone know if the H/K nav unit would drop into a non-nav 2017 STI? I like nav, but I don't like H/k speakers.
