This thread - http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=883746 - has some good information about determining which is which.

The easiest way is to look at the pistons if you know they are stock. Since you want an early series motor, you'll want to see pistons with a large square-type depression across the face of the pistons. If the block is the newer type, the pistons will have a flat top with small moon shaped recesses for the valves.

Either type will be just fine if you're going to just build a daily driver.

Going to have to run premium if you build a hybrid with EJ22 heads regardless of which Ej25 bottom end you use...

I think he may be re-using the 97 EJ25D heads from the legacy. He should be fine with regular gas....I've gone back to cheap gas on my setup....and it's got more compression than he'll have.

I'm running a 00' EJ25 bottom end with shaved 98RS heads and .046" Cometic headgaskets. I started off running premium because I was getting misfires and knock. It turned out to be bad gas from sitting too long. Now I run 87-89 and have no problems. I use an Apexi SAFC to dial in fuel trims...but only because I'm running this motor on a 1.8L ECU.

CR numbers should be about 11:1....but I didn't do any cc'ing of anything on this motor. I followed the info posted here and other forums, which has proven to be hit and miss at best. I knew I mighta needed premium and accepted it. Now I'm happy I can run regular.

xrturbo: I have a few phase I shortblocks if you need one asap. Might even trade ya for a phase II!!!

This is exactly what I"m doing, I just picked up these

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWN%3AIT

and hope to find a phase 2 shortblock. What type of numbers are you putting down Jay? if not numbers, what does the butt dyno tell you?
I'm planning on running this in my 98 forester which has the dohc at the moment, so it should run fine with the new setup.

He's got Borla knockoff and a JC sports intake. He has recently installed a Link to play with it more. I haven't talked to him in a month or so and don't know how it has worked out...

I don't have any dyno numbers. The butt dyno is telling me I'm making at least as much as our RS and can peddle around with it. The stock revlimiter on the 1.8ECU comes in real quick everywhere but 5th....and that's only because I primarily use it to go to work and don't see a need for much more than occasional triple digits.

Quick rundown:
'00 bottom end
.046" headgaskets
DOHC heads shaved ~.010" (ported&polished)
stock RS cams
USDM STi valvesprings/retainers
EJ20G intake manifold
EJ18 TB
EJ18 ECU and sensors
98RS injectors/rails/fpr
Apexi SAFC
RS fuelpump
EJ25 Fidanza flywheel
MRT header (half-catted)
96 brighton trans

I wish you would get that car on the dyno. I have a curiousity to know what Pnp head do on stock cams. I was contemplating putting my Pnp heads on the '95 to run with the SC and see what that does...
