Question What to do: Reset ECU or Take to the shop?

As I was driving home yesterday night, my check engine light came on. I went to AutoZone have them scanned and a number show up as P0440, which is a Evaporative emission control system malfunction. The only thing I can think of that may of cause this is when I was working under the car to change the rear sway bar that I had to move the Canister to put in the heavy duty swaybar brackets. What should I do?

I have a 1999 Subaru Impreza OBS, 96,000 miles.

Help would be great. THx Chad

Reset the ecu first. If it comes back THEN contemplate the shop.

im pretty sure a reset is going to do nothing. it will just take longer to figure out cuz then you have to take it thru at least 1 drive cycle. and im sure the light will come back on.

i had this same problem, reset the ECU, it came back on, took it to midas like 325342 times, they didnt help much (lack of intelligence). it went of after i had my buddy look at it. the second time it came on (2 weeks later) it was the gas cap.

It's worth a shot to reset the ecu. It's free and can't hurt anything.

I'd just check all the connections, make sure the clamps are on, make sure your gas cap is on nice and tight, and reset it. 440 sounds like a general failure, not a specific leak, so I'd check the plugs on all the electrical connections as well. If you did not put the canister back into the stock location, I'd make sure you didn't mount it in a way that pinches any of the hoses. You may also want to check your fuses. You may have shorted something while working on it and just popped a fuse.

I don't think it is going to hurt to reset and wait out another drive cycle. It shouldn't make your car run poorly or dangerously as long as you aren't dripping gas or something. I'd get more in a hurry if you could smell gas.

i'm surprised autozone dind't clear it for you. get it cleared & drive until it comes back then bring it to a shop or make sure everything is still connected back there where you were fooling around.

Look around the canister and anything you touched, make sure its all there and hooked up, you shouldn't have a check engine unless something is not connected...

i doubt the canister randomly went bad that same time you moved it.

for the record....that cel code often means your gas cap is loose, or has some grit around the seal....

I have the same code..... 3 times in 4 months.... one of my friends (subaru tech) sent me this:

those cars are also bad for the wires corroding at the canister a lil past the connector if you follow it where the 2 wires turn into one there always broken ,if your light comes on again check that easy fix too.hope that help at all .oh yeah ,another thing is go under the dash drivers side and connect the green connector ,turn the ignition on goto the canister and you hear a valve opening and closing opening and closing like a ticking noise if not the valve is seized ,thats another comun problem off the top of my head.

In my case.... I'll check the connectors to see if the wire is corroded.... I change the gas cap a month or so ago.
