Default 01 RS exhaust install

well i'm finally going to get a chance to use the garage at my house (roomates had a wrecked golf in there forever, striping it down) and am about to install a Borla Cat-Back setup. my only worry is will i have to torch anything and just how hard is it to take off the stock set up. also not sure if i'll need to get new hangers or if the borla setup will include everything i need.

my resonator is making this god awful rattling sound so instead of just taking it out, i've decided to replace the whole thing. we have plenty of tools, but i just don't want to get myself in a situation where i'd have to end up towing it somewhere cause i funked up. now yes, i'm thinking worst case scenario, but just don't have the time nor cash to mess up.

i thought there was a step by step with pictures on Scooby-Mods, guess i was wrong. any guidance or advice is greatly appreciated.

I have the Borla catback on my car. Install is a snap, though I highly recommend urethane exhaust hangers (Cobb is what I used, KartBoy, Cusco and STi also make them). Other than that it's not a big deal. The bolts to the catpipe WILL be a bitch to get off. My car was only a year old and took a hell of a lot of muscle. Oh, and the bolts that come with the catback aren't nearly long enough, so get slightly bigger and at least an inch to an inch and a quarter longer bolts before you start.

For me it was getting the header bolts off. I had to go to a shop so they could torch em to get em off. Other than that it was a simple install with the factory jack.

The only thing that may give you trouble is where the intermediate pipe bolts to the catalytic converter. Those 2 bolts may round off or break. But all you have to do is grind them off if they strip. Then after that, you just have to undo the exhaust from the hangers and put the new on. Make sure you have new bolts for the cat/intermediate pipe connection and new gaskets. Your old hangers should work fine for now. And if you want to replace them later, it's not that hard.

Being an 01, you may get lucky and those bolts may come right off and you may be able to reuse them. But I would have 2 extra bolts and nuts just in case.

i pulled a hurnia tryin to break loose header bolts. Catback bolts are a breeze, get a breaker bar fit a pipe over it and pull or push whichever one works for you till it breaks loose. There is this one STP oil that'll make it easier to break loose i forgot wat it was called. There is really no way to screw up installing an exhaust system. its just like a few bolts n hangers.

yeah, the only bolts that i noticed that may be tricky are the ones with springs. i figured i'd have to reuse them. most of the nuts seem ok, not real rusty.

i was also wondering if anyone has had any problems with the clamping setup the Borla's have and if it would be better to just have it welded. just seems kind of odd to me that you would clamp together the midpipe to the muffler.

thanks.

It actually works very well. Doesn't seem like it'd be good, but it is. actually makes for a smoother connection as well, compared to a flanged connection.
