Default The bad, the better, the worse, the good...HG's and new engine

OK, so it's time again.

My phase-II block and DOHC headed engine ate a set of new HG's (the bad)

I redid the HG's as well as a few other things and got it running (the better)

It then decided to "spin" the front and middle passengers side intake cam bearings, doing a pretty good job of it (the worse)

So, now I have to get it running yet again.

The good =

Here is where I think things are going in the near future (meaning less than 6-8 weeks).

COBB Tuning: Stage-2 DOHC heads with street cams (linky)

Crawford: S2 rebuilt STi 2.5L NA shortblock running ~10.5:1 CR (linky).

All to go with.....

COBB Tuning EL headers/High flow cat/catback exhaust.

CM modified DOHC intake manifold

COBB Tuning stage-2 drivetrain parts

All running on a 1998 OEM ECU and a MAF.

Parts should be here in a couple of weeks.

I am hoping to end up around 210-220CHP with this setup. Should be nice and be able to last a long time.

If I had a garage and more time, I would do more myself. Sigh.
But, I am keeping the car for a few more years yet. Now, I wonder what it will be like at the COBB Tuning track day in SLC?

Any idea why? I will probably be doing the "hybrid" thing myself, so I'm curious if it's something to do with the head/block combo, ECU tuning (or lack thereof), bad build, or what.

Any details on this? I'm looking into intake manifold options myself, as I plan to build a motor this spring.

Hi Pat.

I think it was a missed minor detail on reassembly. Almost 2 years ago I blew my original 2.5L a couple of days before going out to the COBB meet.

I slapped a "ready to be reassembled" engine together overnight and then did the trip out to SLC.
Both HG's went out at the 6:00 position (3 cylinders out of 4).

I don't think it is a combination issue.
Oh, and since I am a MAF car, no EM/tuning. Just a stock ECU.

The "CM" is my initials. Mostly gasket matching, but I need my new heads here before I do anything.

I guess I "legally" can't run FSP anymore.

Oh, and any plans to pop it on a dyno for some numbers when it's assembled? This build isn't too different from mine. Should be interesting!

What's worse than this is that I've taken apart 3-4 of these DOHC motors and never saw any cam bearings to speak of.... What actually spun on yours?

He knows there's no bearing, but was describing to for the best understanding of the group. Somehow the cam journals didn't get proper lubrication and the cam seized in the head!

^^^What Matt said.

Yes, I know that the cams in a DOHC ride directly in the machined heads. But either way, the aluminum is smeared rather well (relative term) all over the place.

Matt and I have discussed in another forum.

Solution, I hope to do a "Dynorad" set of runs after the engine is installed and broken in.

Oh, I plan on running across rt80 on my way to the COBB meet. Maybe we can met up for a bit.
