Default I've got a few problems.

I just bought a 99 2.5RS about 2 weeks ago. Then about a week ago I noticed a few things. I noticed that it idles low.. like ~500 rpm, and it stays there when warmed up and doesn't change. It started to backfire and sputers a lot when I give it gas.. but not like floor it, but like get it up there. And it does it between 2000 and 4500 rpm.. so it's annoying. The headgasket was replaced about a month before I bought it and it wasn't driven for that month. I've read about coils and such, but I want to know if there could e more to it because of the whole idleing low?

Well, for the idling, Subaru's idle very low. The needle on my 05 RS only sits barely a hair over the 500rpm mark at normal idle. So I'd say you're fine there.

As for the backfiring, does the car have any mods at all? Subaru's run rich, and you hear the popping and such as soon as the exhaust is upgraded to aftermarket.

This is my sisters car and I drove it last night just to see what she was talking about. It feels like its dropping a cylinder when you put any strain on it below 2500. Sometimes, but not all the time it will backfire when missing. The higher the gear, the more noticable the sputtering gets. It doesn't throw any CELs so i don't know where to start. Maybe plugs and wires? Then try the coil after? Anything to look at before those things?

When you start the car cold the engine idles @500 RPM? It doesn't idle @ 1200 for a few minutes and then progressively drops to 500 every few minutes?

Try running a few bottles of injector cleaner through. I bet that will clear it up. I bought my car new in 98 and back when the board first started this was a recurring issue.

The injectors are most likely dirty. If you can't hold out for a tank or two of gas, get them cleaned. Should do the trick

I'll tell her to try that. I'm also going to try to test the ignition coil this evening if i get a chance to see if that might be the cause of the hesitation.
