Default how much crank endplay can the 2.5 take

I noticed when I first got my 2.5dohc that I could push the crank back and forth a little, 2-3mm I guess. I have an automatic transmission currently so I'm not worried about stress on the crank's thrust bearing, but I will be putting on a 5 speed with a stock 2.5 clutch. The guy I got the 2.5 from had a stiffer clutch than stock so I'm concerned about how long the engine will go before the play causes issues. I would get the block rebuilt but I don't have faith in any local shops and I may get a turbo block in the future anyways. I just don't want to cause severe damage to the engine, don't want the next person to get it to have to do major work. Any advice? I can picture the engine crank moving back and forth every time I will be pushing the clutch in and that worries me. (sorry if I'm sounding obsessive here )

Not obsessive at all - I've bypassed the clutch-starter interlock on our LOB, Miata, and Tacoma, believing it'll reduce non-lubed stress on the thrust bearing.

Sounds like a helpful step. My old 280zx didn't have a starter interlock, that helped when it flooded on a street in Houston and the car sucked in water and died. (don't laugh, I was doing fine until this big city truck splashed a huge wave of water over my hood ) When it wouldn't crank from the water saturating the plugs, I just put it in first gear and used the starter to drive the car up into a parking lot. Then after getting all the water out of the air filter box and cranking it a few times, the zx cranked right up! I miss my zx.

You better get a dial indicator out and measure the endplay. My Subaru factory manual quotes end play at 0.030-0.115mm or 0.0012-0.0045 inches with a MAXIUM of 0.25mm or 0.0098 inches. If your guestament is correct your engine is very sick. Ed Hayes

building these 2.5 finding a lot of thrust brg wear.looked through 5 blocks before i found a good crank.there is two crank set up center and read thrust in the 2.5 dohc.
the cranks with the center trust seem to have the most end play and crankshaft wear.
im sending some cranks to standerd cranks to see if they can weld and grand the trust.federal mogel is suposed to have a oversized thrust so you can grind 2 to 5 thousands off the trust giving you a bigger thrust.so if you 2.5 has over a hundred grand im going to say it worn.
