head gaskets?
I was just checking if anyone else agrees with my prediction. I have a 98 rs and sometimes when driving my duct temp drops to outside temp and my engine temp jumps close to the hot level. Then very breifly it goes back to normal and the duct temp returns to where it was. I'm thinkin that the head gaskets are starting to go what do you think???
If I do need to replace the headgaskets the suby dealer said that they do not replace the head bolts. In my shop we always replace the headbolts on cars. I was wondering what everyone else has done. The local machine shop said they would port and polish the heads for $350. Has anyone else done this and if so how much for gains have you received? Thanks for your help!!

What do you mean by duct temp?
If the coolent temp goes up then comes back down it sounds like the thermostat has gone bad or you have a clog in the cooling stream. Replace the thermostat with one from the subi dealer and see if you still have trouble. Make sure to replace it with one from the dealer. The cheaper auto parts store models often don't have the check ball that allows air bubbles to burp out of the cooling system. This will cause endless overheats and eventually warp the deck or blow the motor. As well replace the radiator cap ($8) for 13# at Advance Auto. If this gets clogged or malfunctions it could trap the coolent in the overflow reserviour not letting it back into the motor. A good sign that this is the culprit is if you run the car until warm, shut it off and let it cool. If you see the upper radiator hose collapse pop the radiator cap off and watch it re-inflate. Replace the cap immediately. Let us know how it turns out. Brad |

pretty sure he means the heat inside the car when he says duct temp. Sounds like air bubbles or too little coolant, are you lossing any? boiling in the resevoir?

i'm a mechanic and i dont beleive that the thermostat is the culprit. Inside the overflow it seams that there is an oily residue in the tank oh crap

most people reuse the head bolts, but the shop manual suggests new ones.
Not sure the p&p is worth it by itself, but if you plan to do the whole build up of cams etc. then go for it. Check for goopy stuff in the bottom of radiator overflow tank. Check for signs of barfed up coolent around said tank. Try not to use the dealer as they charge too much for the HG job. An indy shop is usually significantly less $$. |

What year is it, most 98 through 99's rs have headgasket problems! there known for that. I had the same problem, overheated the engine, broke the gasket, and broke the piston rings. I was sucking through gallons of oil a week.
Keep an eye out for your antifreeze for your engine. If it starts getting air in the system you might have a headgasket problem. The compression from the piston drives air through the broken gasket and into small holes around the engine head. These holes let antifreeze through out the engine and keep it cool. if air gets in, the antifreeze and cooling system can't do its job and the engine overheats. Causing major problems!!!!!!!! Keep an eye out for you oil level too. If that starts to go you might have piston ring problems too! Subaru now replaces the gaskets with a new materal that will not cause anymore failures. Mine did this and it was the radiator cap. Any dealership should be able to test it and tell you if its bad or not.
