leaking oil, not sure where from....
Hi all, i noticed a burning smell from the pass. side of the car (98 2.5GT w/95k miles) note sure exactly where but my guess is the crank seal. If so how much am i looking for R&R DIY vs. stealership?

If it's coming from the side (vice the center) then it's probably more likely to be a cam seal. Or it could be the cam cover gasket. Honestly, if it's making a burning smell, that almost certainly means it's something dripping on the exhaust and burning off, which pretty much rules out the crank seal and the cam seals.
Just crawl under there with a flashlight and see if you can find the source. Otherwise it'll just be speculation on our part as to what it would cost to fix any one of a number of possible sources. |

I have seen rear crank seals and the oil seperator plates get oil onto the exhaust "Y" pipes and burn off the oil.
If you need either, that is the time to do a clutch and/or light flywheel. Look for a price for a clutch install and that is about what you will pay. Could also be cam/cam cover seals. |

could also be the oil pan gasket. Mine has been leaking for a little while now.

looked at more earlier this morning and its the plating by the plugwires (where you insert it to the sparkplug). so that would be cam seal correct?

The "well" the plug wires fit into is part of the valve cover. There is a seal in there.
You can pull the valve covers (a bit of a wiggle job with the engine in the car, but doable) and replace the outer seal (around the perimeter of the cover) and the "well seal" also. You may also want the bolt seals (IIRC, there are 6 per cover). |

Pull your plugs and check for oil residue on the insulation (past the threads).

CitySubie, you will lose oil (the rate of loss is dependant on how bad the leak is) and it may drop onto the exhaust. Thus a burning oil smell.
Typically, when people talk "Oil Consumption" they are talking valve stem leaks or oil blowby past the piston rings. |
