Does it sound like a cowbell? 'ding ding ding ding' kida sound. Chances are its your heat shields. If your exaust was loose, youd hear a lot more than rattling, youd hear a exaust leak!

Get some hose clamps and put them at the ends of the header. either that or just cut them off (the heat shields that is)

Settle down, not everyone knows everything. I'm a prime example.

You can get them at any autoparts or home improvement store. Just make sure you get ones that are large enough to go around the sheilds.

My favorite solution is:

(what the kid is wearing on her head... )
+

It's loud, obnoxious, dangerous (sparks flying everywhere) and tons of fun. I've been rattle free for 8 months now.

You can remove the heat shields without cutting as well, but it's a pain in the ass! You just have to pry open the parts of the shield that are folded together.

i had a similar problem, but oddly enough it was my resonator causing all the metal grinding sounds.....yeah, figures the pieces that helps the exhaust note made it louder. oh well, i'm replacing everything with a Borla Cat Back system this weekend anyway.

Hmm- you don't by chance have a way to get a sound clip of these noises do you? I took my car in today to try to stop a exhaust rattle- it might be the same thing. Happens on decel mostly, around 2800-3100 rpms. I've got a cobb header/cat mated up to a borla catback, with a resonator welded into the borla midpipe. Really annoying, buzzing/rattle. Nothing touching under there... no header heat shields, only the stock ones above the cat and toward the rear of the drive tunnel.... kartboy hangers, so no movement there...

yeah, my exhaust is still stock, it took forever to figure out what it was. i got under the car and started tapping pieces with a mallet. hit the heat shields, cats, you name it. nothing. then i thought well what the hell, lets check the entire exhaust. as soon as i hit the resonator....walla, there it was.

who knows what's up with it, the resonator is the last thing that i thought would make an annoying sound, i've been dealing with it for quite sometime and it looks like i'll have to deal with it a bit longer. the place i ordered my exhaust from sent me a borla cat back system for an 02 WRX......i own a 01 RS.....yeah. i swear i'm a sh it magnet.

My exhaust rattles at an exact RPM range, like from 3,412 rpm to 3592 rpm. Accel, decel, or maintaining speed, if the RPM is in one of those ranges that rattles, it rattles like crazy. Otherwise, it's quiet. Bugs the crap out of me!

Once I can afford a new header, I'm going to get a stainless steel EL header, if I can find one for cheap.
