thinking of a stromung catback exhaust...
I have an 01 rs and was thinking of getting a stromung catback with 2.25" tubing. I wanted to know what the difference in the straight pipe going to the muffler does compared to stock and if there are any O2 sensor relocations that have to happen.

also another question, do you get gains from just a muffler change alone?

the 'straight pipe' removes a resonator in the midpipe. resonator is there just to quiet things down. this will open up maybe 1hp or so, its much like a muffler. there are no o2 sensor relocations. the 2 o2 sensors in the exhaust are in the cat section. catback is just a midpipe and the axleback (axleback has the muffler). there are very little gains by switching a muffler, maybe 1hp.

i have dualtip axle back. isnt loud, but has a deep tone. I love it, but opted not to go cat-back because i heard the wagons can drone with no resonator. no problems with cops yet ::knocks on wood::

i put a vid of my car somewhere on the board. Vid = http://moogoob.home.comcast.net/stromung_catback.wmv post = http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...light=stromung It was a bit louder than most folks say... in a good way though. Loud enough to fail NJ inspection. Sounds even cooler after the LW flywheel. Revs down faster and burbles and pops better. maybe time for a new vid. |

I recently put on TWE headers with the Stromung XA cat back. With a Stromung cat it is LOUD, with the stock cat it's a bit more liveable. I'm putting in a resonator over the weekend so I'll try the Stromung cat again and see how loud things are now.
The loudness is more of a resonating/booming noise in the cabin of the car. If I can get rid of that somewhat I'll be happy. I imagine things would be quieter with the stock headers and cat. |

you won't regret the stromung dual-tip, best part is it looks stock so the cops don't really hassle you, or atleast haven't me. i have one combined with a borla header & it's the meanest sounding slow car ever i noticed it reved a bit freeer up towards redline or maybe it was hopeful thinking but it is one of my favorite mods to the car!

You can get a longish sound clip of my setup here (right click-save as)
This is with TWE headers, Stromung high-flow cat, Stromung midpipe with a 12" resonator added, and a Stromung XA (single tip) axle-back. This is just from a regular drive around, up to 3000 rpms at most, and then cruising at 50 mph in 5th gear. The clip is recorded in a really low volume, so you'll have to turn up your speakers quite a bit. I'll try to get a better sound clip in a day or two. You'll also want a subwoofer to get a good idea of how this sounds. |

I can't believe that Stromung is still being used/bought. I had that exhaust on my car 5 years agos for about a year. That thing just kept on getting louder and louder, until everyone dreaded being in my car because of the drone inside my cabin during cruising speeds. (Did have that nice boxer engine sound though).
So I replaced it with a Greddy Evo, which is still on my car. But while replacing it, I noticed that the bottom welds of the muffler totally rusted out. 1 year in So Cal weather = useless, rusted loud muffler. Of course it was the mild steel version. I did however like the dual tip look instead of the coffee can look (like my current Greddy Evo...which is why I painted it flat black). Just my 1 cent about the Stromung. Ben T. |

i have a stromung axle back on my 98 rs...no complaints or tickets. It sounds awesome and it is not overly obnoxios. I also have a high flow cat which makes it considerably louder but when i just had the axle back on, it was suprisingly not that much louder. The intake will complement the exhaust a lot too, with the intake making a high pitch and the exhaust with the bass. No rust on it either...and it looks pretty factory, almost un-noticable to a non-suby enthusiest
But thats my advice |

yea, if you get any exhaust, get it in stainless. Thats what mine is. from the headers to the dual tips, all Stainless Steel

Well you could always just get a 2.25" midpipe with a resonator from www.techworkseng.com and sell the Stromung pipe to someone else.
Yes, the Stromung axleback sounds great. =S2= |

I ordered a Stomung, resonated mid pipe from Stromung directly. I would bet it is available for your car too, it is just that vendors like boxer4racing don't carry the resonated versions.
