'01 RS - Car stutters after filling up
Not sure what's causing it ... every time I get gas, the car stutters for ~ the first 5 miles ... new fuel filter ... running 89 octane gas ... any thoughts?
Car has 111,000 miles on it ...

If you did a search under my name, you would find a very similar thread...
Stop topping the tank off! When the Impreza is topped off, it floods the charcoal canister inlets and cause the car to stumble for a bit until the lines clear out. |

Over filling too much will get gas into the charcole canister and it takes some time to convert to fumes so the engine can suck it out. Shut of gas at the first or second nozzle click.

You may have to listen for the "cup filling up" sound and stop before the auto-click-off. I've noticed a lot of gas nozzles won't click until it's filled enough that there's a pool of gas outside the flap, sometimes enough to run down the side of my Forester.
Fun, fun. Smoke anyone? |

When I read Tex's thread and followed the recommendation, it has done it less and less. The problem has not been eliminate, but is managable. BTW the car did the exact same thing after changing fuel filter, plugs and wires. It has got to do with the charcoal canister. |

BTW, now that these cars are getting older, the charcoal canister has a finite life.
It may be telling you it is time to replace it. |

Bumps.....
Yesterday my car began doing this again, but I have half a tank of gas. If I am cruising I can feel the car lose power for split seconds at a time. Less noticable the higher the gear. Major bucking in 1st gear. Could this be caused be a failing canister? Bad spark plug? Check my codes at autozone and there was nothing other than the P0420 I get all the time. Any thoughts? |

The fill up problem is more noticable in higher gears (low engine load)... I would be looking to change out the plugs and maybe wires in your car... how long have you been on those wires? plugs?

Really just changed the plugs about 2 months ago (NGK6E-11) and the wires were changed out toward the end of last year (OEM). Car seems to running fine, but yesterday I did notice the symptomes again. I haven't taken a trip more than 5 miles yet. Do you think it could be a dirty injector(s)? |

Similar Problem
Hey, I'm facing a similar problem and I don't want to lose the attention of you all who seem to be familiar with it by starting another thread. I'm wondering if the problems with the full tank might be found on a 1995 Impreza also. When the tank is full, and idling, the tach often drops down close to zero (but hasn't ever cut off). That makes starting a bit rougher than desired. I just bought this car and it was full but hasn't been doing this for a few days, now that there's less gas. Coincidence? I hope not.
