Default Repainting 06 Impreza Trunk Emblem

Hey, I'm just wondering if the process for repainting the Subaru emblem in the middle of the trunk on the 06's is the same as repainting the front grille badge ("i" badge, subaru stars, etc.) I'm pretty sure this hasn't been covered, and I haven't seen one repainted yet. I think that a nice black emblem would look good on my car

All I found when I searched was how to do the front grille emblem, not the one on the trunk. I'm not talking about the SUBARU letters either, but the 06 stars of pleides trunk emblem. If anyone can link me to a thread about this, I'd appreciate it as well. If it's the same as doing the front grille one, I've already done it with the "i" badge, so I was just wondering if the badge is constructed in the same way. Thanks

I bet you can't just sand down the backside to repaint - the posts probably get in the way in some spots

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I wasn't even thinking about how, even after filing them down to be flush, there'd probably still be something in the way of me sanding off the color.... Well, thanks a lot

I just paint matched my front badge fine, but I moved on to the back and found the backplate + posts like the Picture above. I'm stumped on how to get the emblem out from that backplate. Should I just blast it with the heat gun, or do I have to file down that whole backplate to the back of the emblem? I know people have done this, including ESEMES.

Thanks!

I did my front one cherry blossom red already...and I am going to do my rear one steel grey metallic. I need to know how to get the backplate off as well. Maybe try PM'ing ESEMES?

Did anybody find out yet? Is it just the hair drier to soften up the glue?

Yeah here ya go:

1) remove emblem + badge totally
2) drill a few small holes in the back of the plastic backplate so they get to the emblem, but don't actually pierce it. (kinda tricky just go slow) I drilled 3 holes one on each side and one in the middle.
3) Heat it up (as I did but isnt entirely necessary)
4) tap out the emblem with a few tools. I used the flat side of a nail. It is kinda hard to push it out but just keep pushing and make sure not to scratch the chrome stars or damage the paint on the back of the emblem. I worked one side open and stuck a pocket knife in the crack to wedge it open even farther.

Hope that that helps

thank esemes for the technique!

Well I have another question too... How do you get the badge flush with the double sided automotive tape? I tried for 30 minutes to get it perfectly flush but it was to no avail. Do you just use some kind of adhesive? I might want to redo mine in the future so I don't want them permanently stuck on there. Thanks!

I am not sure about the rear one...but the front grille one, I used thin strips of regular double-faced tape, worked great.

Oh yeah, thanks for the drilling advice for the rear badge

Haha, not scotch tape...just regular thin white double-faced tape, I matched it up with the thickness of the stock tape.

still pretty confused link me if you got one! Is completely flat, like unmeasurably so or does it actually have the small layer of foam/adhesive?

It has a small layer of adhesive on both sides, with a little bit of foam in between...same thickness as the stock adhesive tape, like maybe 2mm. I bought it at a local hardware store, I don't have the packaging anymore sorry bro!

Thanks for posting the instructions!

Something I don't quite understand... Is the purpose of drilling it to create holes for prying? Or reduce suction?

Create holes to push off plastic face from behind.

^correct. There is basically no way you could pry off the emblem from the front so you must push it off from behind through the holes you drill.

What size holes are we talking about here? Drill into the back portion of the trunk into those 2 posts? There's not a hole lot of room back there. I don't see how that won't go through the surfice and into the inside of the emblem and then to apply enough pressure to push the front part off?
