Talking MRT full exhausts for Legacy!

I saw that there was a group buy going on for FULL exhausts (engine back) from MRT (Middleton Racing in Australia) for the Impreza. I emailed the person running the GB, and asked if MRT makes them for the Legacy (specifically my MY99 2.5GT). MRT DOES make a full exhaust for our car.

I don't think it's stainless or anything, but MRT does make great stuff. The GB is for $420 + shipping, which they say is ~100 more. So, for $520, you can get a FULL exhaust system from a great company.

Just wanted to give the heads up. I am debating getting the exhaust, but since I don't know if I am going to go the turbo route, I have not made a move on it yet!

I had the chance to check out the exhaust today on an Impreza (met up with Chuck, the guy who posted all the pictures on the above link). He's had the system on the car for a couple years and really has no rust problems whatsoever. There's some discoloration around the weld seams, and the flanges, but nothing any worse than what my stock exhaust looks like. Chuck said the "hi temp" paint on the headers flaked off pretty quickly, but everything downstream of the cat (the "cold" part of the exhaust) has kept the paint on pretty well. The headers looked very clean, even without the paint on there, basically no rust problems at all.

Looking under the car in a wet parking lot (read: I didn't crawl under the car for a real good look) it appeared that everything fits under the car quite nicely. The tip looks exactly like the stock tip, but is slightly bigger - maybe 1/2" larger in diameter.

As for sound, I like it. At idle you can just barely tell it's not stock, just a slight rumble to it. Under acceleration it has a nice growl to it, but again, not all that loud. Definitely louder than stock (which isn't saying much, since the stock exhaust is utterly silent IMHO), but not overbearing. The exhaust is at it's loudest when engine braking, again has a nice racy growl/snarl to it, but not too much. Unfortunately I wasn't able to bring my Digital8 camera with me, as I was going to get some sound clips. Bummer!

Chuck said even on long drives it's not bad, and I would agree. We only took a short drive (10-15min maybe), but I could tell it's easily liveable (sp?). We even had the stereo turned off to listen to the exhaust, so with the stereo on it would be even less noticeable.

I also had a chance to follow Chuck for a bit, and again the exhaust is not loud at all. Another couple guys from NESIC, CBLOCK and ^jynx^, rode with Chuck and I and they also liked the sound of things. CBLOCK said it's definitely quieter than his Stromung. If you want a second opinion, you might try looking up their email addresses over on the NESIC Forum and see what they have to say.

I'm going to sign up now. I think it fits the bill for me perfectly. Slightly larger but unobtrusive tip, nice growl without being exaggerated (I don't want my exhaust making promises the car can't keep, if you know what I mean), and the price is right - about $525 or so for a full setup.

Rats, I sure wish I had some spare money lying around. That whole deal has been interesting to me, but to hear your first hand review kind of seals the deal. We're buying one house and selling another, and Christmas is here, and blah blah blah! You know the routine. Big ticket car items are relegated to the bottom of the heap.
