Post MY2K GT Wheel Questions

I just went through the whole Legacy Forum topic list, and didn't see this covered anywhere, so I apologize if this is a repeat.

I'm looking for some information regarding the OEM wheels on MY2K GTs. Hopefully, someone can save me from the research.

Who makes the wheels for Subaru? Are they real BBS, or knock-offs?

How much do they weigh? I understand the Impreza RS wheels are 17 or so pounds, but I've seen nothing regarding the GT wheels.

...my MY97 Leg. GT has 16X6.5 w/ 55 offset wheels that are sort of a BBS look a like, multiple radial ribs. I think they're made by Subaru, they're cast stamped "Subaru" all over. I think all other MY's GTs (>97) have the same wheel, they look identical, except the "limited" which is only slightly different in appearance, shaved / faced ribs. Remember the Impreza (at least my MY98) has 16X7 w/ 53 offset wheels (gold 5-spoke), again cast stamped Subaru. Take the wheels off and the name / size etc. is cast stamped on the back.

I just had my better half stand on the bathroom scale w/ and w/o an extra MY97 Legacy GT wheel (broken but all there) and it weighs about 18 pounds.

From all accounts that heard (or read on this board), OEM Subie wheels are of exceptional quality and low weight. You have to spend big money if you want to improve on Subie wheels.

If memory serves correct, they are made for Subaru by BBS (I'm about 80% sure).

The stampings on my Legacy's wheel don't indicate the manufacturer, as far as I can tell, but the phrase "made in Japan" and the JWL stamp indicate that the wheels are made in Japan, so probably not BBS (unless they have a factory outside of the EU which I don't know about). I don't think these wheels are the same as the US ones (big 5-spokers) and I imagine that the US-made Subarus would have high local content, so the wheels are probably American-made.

The huge 55mm offset of the wheel - regardless of design/manufacturer - makes the outer edge extremely strong, where the spokes support the rim, at the expense of support on the inside of the wheel. I have two buckled wheels to support this theory (rut in road hit at about 35 mph).

As big a company as Fuji Heavy Industries is, it would not surprise me at all if the rims are made in Japan by some other Fuji-owned company. My '99 rims have the little JWL symbol by the center cap, but I don't see Made in Japan anywhere on the face, so who knows. Looks like they ain't BBS, at the very least.

I rotated my wheels this weekend and I think I saw made in japan on the inside of the wheels.
