Default Knock sensor check/change

I read some post where people were talking about changing the knock sensor,but they didn't say why. what is the knock ?can you test it? My 1990 legacy idles rough at times.I'm going to check/clean idle air control sensor.Does anybody have any other ideas? Thanks
