Towing with a '93 turbo wagon...
I'm getting ready for a move with my girlfriend back to Oakland. Uhaul wants ~$900 for a 14' van and a car trailer(for my car). I was just wondering if anyone here has ever towed anything with their turbo wagon, and what size trailer were they towing. I don't want to shell out $900 so I'm trying to figure out another option. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is this for a '93 legacy or the newer models. I know it'll probably be listed in the owners manual but I was just curious if anyone here has had any experience towing with their car.

Subaru used to recommend against towing with turbocharged vehicles. You wind up boosting the turbo constantly and can burn it out (according to them - not according to my experience... I never towed with my turbo).
Also, due to the wheelbase and weight of our cars, the biggest trailer you can safely pull is 6x8 or 6x10, depending on old or new trailer. Essentially, the largest single-axle trailer you can rent - double-axle will wind up pulling the car around. Consider renting a van or SUV with trailer hitch from Alamo or Enterprise to pull the trailer and have someone else drive the Legacy. That way you can also get a bigger trailer - remember that UHaul also charges mileage on their box vans but not on their trailers, and most car rental places will rent one-way for a small surcharge and don't charge mileage. |
