trying to find a project
Hello all
I want to change my nickname!!! hehe. I resort to you all experienced and intelligent NASIOC forum members for help. I am finally close to ready to buy a GC8 project to start up. Unfortunately i only can use 1000 of the savings i am receiving next monday. Been looking on Ebay and autotrader for 93 to 95 fwd Imprezas and the only one with this very limited budget of mine is a suspicious 95 car that has a grey spot in the rear left quarter and a black spare wheel in this same place. Only one picture and not very detailed. I dont mind the burn out paint or the oldish appereance. I do own a new economy daily drive that allows me to patiently do the repairs and learn in the process, there is no hurry. I dont want to invest too much in the vehicle it self so i can then mod up. I would only need it to have a good body (I know, i know, we men only think bout that). I am as mentioned before in a city very close to the border with California USA. This particular car is only 80 miles away, I dont have much time to decide because the add says he wants to sell asap. What should i do? I should be receiveing my money next monday. do i save more and look for something better? I have only seen FWD cars in very good shape and running in the 3000 mark. I dont really need a strong runner with only 110 hps. I just want a good project to start with and not mess my daily drive. Also, if i manage to build a very quick car i dont want to drive it everyday in the city. I would like to use it for rally X and such. Do you know of any possible project around better than the intended target?? Sorry for the dumbiness and my poor comunicating skills in this wonderful language.

A: don't get a FWD unless its realllly reallly cheep B: don't get a auto unless its almost free the fwd/manual conversions are a PITA C: the car above only redeaming propertie is that is a 2 door 95 which is rare D: i picked up my 93 awd for 1800 and paid too much keep looking |

thanks a lot Jaxx
this paticular item is 5 speed manual. So, you think i can get me a car more appropiate for the swap with the budget i have in mind? I am at the job now, just learned we get our money tomorrow. Your advice is very important for me because besides the price of the car itself i must then have the tax fee for the importation to Mexico. Any other place I should be looking at other than the 2 i mentioned? if i dont find anything else, how much is it reasonble to pay for a car like the one in the picture? thanks again for the help Hector |

i got a 95 coupe impreza fwd like that which was in the family... i have done the awd swap and motor swap but i wish i would have started with AWD, because i had to buy a parts car to do the awd swap anyways.
that car is torn to bits, i wouldnt pay more than 400 for that, but then again i wouldnt because it is FWD. a friend here in oregon got a very straight and clean 95 5spd awd coupe for 1700 with a bad motor, that is an awesome price. only get a 95 fwd IF the gas tank has a divit in it (awd gas tank came on some 95 fwd cars) for the driveshaft. then you can get legacy parts from a junkyard to do the awd swap. its just junkyards dont sell gas tanks and awd gas tanks are rare. (my 95 fwd came with a awd tank, same color as in the pic) |

wow, this is more useful everytime, great forum. thanks Natoe. Another thing to consider then is the gas tank. I had read something about it in this forum but, did not know the tank was difficult to find. Ok, I then calm down and look for a better candidate. Is more about looking for the right thing. I really look forward to start asking for advice in the swap itself. I cant thank enough this community.
My only curiousity now, (i think concern would be a too serious word) is if there is enough population of these cars in SoCal or Arizona. I see auctions of imprezas in ebay from many other cities mainly from NY, Oregon, etc. but not many in CA. Will try the nasioc, rs and scooby clasifieds. best regards Hector Last edited by needasubaru; 05-05-2006 at 12:38 AM. |

i got my 95 L for $1400. and it was great inside. just a little rough spot outside, and high miles. if you do a swap no worries. but go awd to start, and 5spd if possible. there are deals, just have some patience homie, she'll come along when you are ready!! any state with zero snow in the populus regions is gonna yeild minimal cars. ny. pa, vt, nh, ct, ma, etc. all have plenty to choose from. but you'll run into states that use salt instead of cinders(read more rust). choose wisely. and get an LX model impreza they come with disc brakes in the rear already. have fun! --keith

arent most the LX's auto though...? get 5spd for sure like jaxx said. also look in oregon and cali i would guess. i know the pacific NW rust is a rare thing, and there are plenty of subies because of the weather and terrain.

Ok. Then i stay away from FWD. I must say. I think the car must be running somehow for me to be able to import it, not sure, will investigate. I havent ever imported a car, but most ppl here do. Thanks Kheff and Natoe for the advice. I also think i must look for 5 spd manual. I will save some more and will start looking from now for a good oportunity. thanks a lot
best regards Hector |

all LX's had disc rears and were in fact lame auto's. but to pass on a cherry chassis because of auto is bogus(if swapping engine/trans anyway). either way
autotrader yeilded my donor chassis in a week of initial looking. i wasn't afraid to drive it 700 miles home either! but situations are different everywhere. good luck!--keith |

except auto-manual swaps, include the pedal box, hydraulic or cable clutch workings....
best thing to find is something with the "safety package" it will have disc brakes and you can still get it 5 spd. but dont worry about getting rear discs, its a VERY easy swap to do later on with junkyard parts. |

also all the options depend on the oportunity. I will stay open to auto tranny if price and availability justify it. I guess i also must be ready to make a somewhat long trip hehe. Maybe i will need to convice some job partners and bosses to change a shift for a Sunday.
saludos Hector |
